Watch my makeup tutorial videos on facebook

Hi everyone! I’ve done several makeup tutorials throughout the years on my facebook page. With the links below to the individual videos, you can watch even if you don’t join facebook. Pretty cool!

Just as a heads up, I’m currently working primarily with MAC makeup and my only studio is in Takoma Park, MD just one mile from Washington, DC. You will hear many references my previous studio locations of Alexandria, Baltimore, and Cabin John in my older videos. However, my only studio is in Takoma Park, MD. You’ll also hear me talking a lot about Younique makeup, but I don’t sell Younique online anymore. I have a few Younique products still available in inventory if there’s something you’re craving.

Enjoy!

Watch my makeup tutorial on facebook!

Watch my makeup tutorial on facebook!

In this video, I did my own makeup on facebook with a live audience and addressed questions. I also talk you through the process of applying your makeup and addressed common issues I’ve seen in the studio. In particular, I covered skin care, makeup 101, contouring, and eye makeup. I focused on a look that’s more on the natural side. (For dramatic looks, I have several archived facebook makeup tutorials that focus on intense smokey eyes, dramatic lips, etc.)

My New Maryland Makeup Studio is Ready!

My New Maryland Makeup Studio is Ready!

Hi everyone! My new makeup studio in Cabin John, Maryland, is ready, and I absolutely love it! I saw clients Saturday and Sunday in it, and we just had a blast.

On Saturday, I led a makeup lesson for two trans-women in a demonstration format. I applied makeup to my face, and they copied my technique with my feedback. After that, I took photos of them in our front living room and on the back deck and stairs. So fun! If you’re interested in a session with a friend, just let me know what you’re looking for and I’ll help you choose the best package

My Sunday client has been to see me several times over the past year, and she was ready to meet some other girls in the community. So after her Total Makeover and photoshoot, my wife, Giselle, and I hosted an “outing” experience at our place with three friends for a small cocktail party. If you’re a repeat client and want to meet other girls, let me know and I can arrange an outing on the town or in-home.

Here are photos of my new makeup studio. Watch for my wardrobe and photography studio pics in a later post.

Ask Beth: I’m considering transition. How can you help?

bethiecard1Question: Beth, I am a transgender woman presenting to the world as a man. I’m considering transitioning to live full-time as a woman in the next few years. I’m still in the closet and not sure of what resources are available or how to proceed with living as my authentic self. How can you help me with my transition, Beth? (adapted from recent conversations with clients)

-Changing Times

Answer:

Dear Changing Times,

Congratulations on beginning your journey toward living authentically! Many of my friends and clients have transitioned since I’ve known them, and transition can be a long, challenging but rewarding process. Everyone’s transition is different and advice can differ dramatically. I don’t have all the answers and am not an authoritative source, but I have worked with many people during their transitions and can point to you to many resources.

Many of my friends tell me there are three aspects to transitioning: a social transition, a medical transition, and a legal transition. You may choose to do none, some, or many/all of the options under each of these broad categories. If you choose to get involved in social or support networks in the area, you’ll quickly learn about many of the resources. A lot of my friends regularly attend MAGIC in Falls Church and Second Friday at MCC in Fairfax. Second Friday encourages spouses to attend as well since transition affects the whole family. I have listed several groups and resources in my links session in the right toolbar (bottom of the screen on a mobile device).

Some transgender women have never dressed or presented as a woman even though they have internally felt female for a very long time. I recently had a client like this who had already come out to her wife and family members but had never seen what she looked like with a femme presentation. More commonly, clients will be completely closeted and want to see how they look presenting as a woman. Many of my full-time friends presented as women on a part-time basis for some time prior to coming to me. In all these cases, I would suggest starting with the 3-hour or 4-hour Total Makeover with Photoshoot so that you can build confidence in your feminine identity and presentation. Take a look at my ideas for people new to presenting as a woman for follow-on sessions.

How I can help with your transition goals

Going forward you may be interested in medical procedures like facial feminization surgery (FFS), permanent hair removal, hormone replacement therapy, and other surgeries. Before visiting surgeons for FFS consultations, you may want to see what the range of options looks like with an FFS Visualization Service. I can take photos for the FFS Visualization Service as I describe below. Legally, you may wish to change your legal name, legal gender, and related legal and work documents. Socially, you may wish to update your clothing and makeup presentation for the workplace and daytime, especially if you’ve mainly been going out at night. You may also choose to come out to friends, family, and coworkers, and you may wish to share a photo of you presenting as your true self. As you transition in the workplace, you may want an updated professional headshot for your LinkedIn profile, resumes, and other professional documents.

Facial Feminization Surgery Visualization

If you’re curious about feminizing your face with surgery, then you may want to see how each procedure could potentially enhance your feminine appearance. In conjunction with the UK-based Virtual FFS service, I can help with that! Check this out:

Makeup Makeover with FFS Virtual Visualization Photos

This session starts with photos en femme (you wear/bring your own clothes) but no wig or makeup to submit to an FFS Virtual Visualization Service such as Virtual FFS. We’ll do a makeup makeover and take the same photo poses with makeup and your wig. After you work with the unaffiliated Virtual FFS service, then you’ll be able to compare no makeup, FFS visualization, and with makeup looks to see what makeup achieves compared to surgery options.

Makeup Lesson for a daytime, work-appropriate look

You may already know how to do a glamorous, evening makeup look but you should be prepared to dial it back for the work environment. We can go over both the basics for a 15-min out-the-door, just-the-basics look and a full-scale, daytime look

Makeup Lesson–2 hours
Makeup Lessons includes hands-on skincare and makeup application. I will apply makeup to half your face and you’ll apply it to the other side with my guidance. You’ll leave with a complete list of your formulas & colors along with written instructions for application.

Professional Headshot

Studio photography available for your professional head shots for your business card, avatar, and LinkedIn. Images will be lightly retouched with Photoshop and delivered via email within 7 days. Add on a makeup makeover if desired.

Other Services of Interest

Feminine Deportment

Other Service Providers

Hair Removal

Many transitioning and full-time transgender women tell me you should start permanent hair removal as soon as possible even if you don’t have a complete plan toward transition. Hair color and density of hair follicles determines what permanent hair removal options could work for you. Many women tell me it takes two years of laser and electrolysis to eliminate their facial hair. I have a couple of options in my Hair & Nail Services links session that come highly recommended from friends and clients. Kimberly Moore and Giselle both have had great results and value from Fay (Forugh Irani), who can be reached at 202-706-4848. She has an office in Arlington.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

If you are interested in hormone replacement therapy (HRT), then you should typically start by seeing a gender therapist such as those listed under my Therapists section of my links or a therapist at Whitman-Walker Health in DC. Some providers, such as Signey Olson in DC, use the informed-consent/harm-reduction protocol, which gets you started on gender-affirming hormone therapy faster than using the WPATH protocol.

Get Professional Help Growing out your Hair

See SanDee in Fairfax City for help growing out your hair in a way that you can style in both guy and girl modes. My friends and clients rave to me about her and I have sat through a session while my friend, Tracy Lynn, got her first girl hair cut and style.

Best wishes on your journey!

I wish you the very best on your journey to discover and express your authentic self. I look forward to being a part of it.

To being fabulous!

Beauty Tips: Create a Neutral Canvas

By Elizabeth Anne Taylor, Makeup Artist & Photographer
Makeovers with Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor applies foundation to Dawn's face to create a neutral canvas to build her color look

Elizabeth Taylor applies foundation to Dawn’s face to create a neutral canvas to build her color look

Hello ladies! I’m Elizabeth Taylor, and I have a male-to-female transformation studio in the Washington, D.C. metro area. I’ve been seeing clients for eighteen months and have several tips I want to share with you about beauty. Today I’m focusing on creating a neutral canvas from your face. That means shaving closely, cleansing, moisturizing, priming, hiding beard shadow and other flaws, and evening out your skin color and texture with foundation.

Make sure that you have the closest and freshest shave you can get. Use a hand-held mirror to inspect under your chin and on the sides of your face to find any stray hairs. Cleanse your entire face with a face wash or lightly exfoliating scrub. Genetic males typically have larger pores than genetic females, so consider adding an exfoliating treatment such as microdermabrasion up to three times per week to visibly reduce pore size. If you have mature skin, fill in wrinkles with wrinkle filler. The wrinkle filler I use draws moisture to the area right away so that the skin plumps and works long term to rebuild collagen with the retinol it contains.

Apply moisturizer to your entire face and neck, which will help your face look more radiant than if you skip this step. Let dry. Apply an eye cream below your eye and into the crow’s feet area. The eye area is one of the first on the face to show signs of age so it needs the more intense moisturizing of an eye cream. My favorite eye cream has finely ground mica in it to optically lift the eye area so you’ll look better right away. At night I apply eye cream above my eye as well since I’m less likely to sweat it off. Using moisturizer and eye cream morning and night will help keep your skin looking youthful long-term.

If you have oily skin in all or part of your face, then consider applying an oil mattifier to those areas after the moisturizing step. The oil mattifier will keep oil buildup and beading at bay for up to eight hours.

Next, apply foundation primer all over face and to your neck in areas where you have beard shadow. Like paint primer, foundation primer fills in the little cracks and crevices on your face, smoothing out your skin and helping the foundation apply evenly.

Next you need to disguise your beard shadow. Most beard shadow has a blue-green undertone. Orange is opposite blue-green on the color wheel, so apply an orange lipstick (or orange cremestick such as Mehron Lt. Auguste) to the areas where you have beard shadow and blend in with your fingers. The coat should be thin and the blue-green will be mostly neutralized. Next, we need to cover up the crazy orange color on your beard shadow. Use a liquid concealer that coordinates with your foundation color and blend it over the orange areas. If beard shadow is still visible, then reapply the orange lipstick plus concealer to that area.

Now we need to use that concealer for its conventional use—lightening small areas of discoloration in the face to make it a little lighter than your regular skin color. Using a concealer brush, stipple concealer onto dark shadows below and around the eyes, red areas, broken capillaries, and other flaws. Stippling is a tapping motion that integrates the concealer into just that flaw, lightening it to slightly lighter than the surrounding skin, rather than spreading it around and lightening the whole area.

For foundation, I love using two different formulas: liquid and mineral powder. The liquid foundation provides excellent coverage while the mineral powder foundation fills in pores and gives a matte, porcelain look to the face. Choose matte foundations instead of luminous because shiny products tend to accentuate flaws such as the larger pores that genetic males are more likely to have. Apply the liquid foundation with your fingers or a liquid foundation brush starting at the center of your face and working outward, covering both your face and the areas of the neck with beard shadow. Don’t put too much product in one area otherwise it can be difficult to blend it out. To avoid this, apply some product to your face with one hand (one side of the brush) and blend it in with the other hand (other side of the brush). It’s better to build up coverage slowly than all at once. Next, dip your mineral powder foundation brush vertically into the mineral powder and tap into the powder a few times to integrate the powder on the brush. Now tap the brush on the side of the container to knock off the excess. Lightly pat the brush tip against your skin to apply color without wiping. Repeat mineral powder application until you have covered all the areas and the coverage meets your needs.

Finally, set the foundation layer by applying a light dusting of translucent powder with a powder brush, which will smooth out your face even more and make you look better in photographs.

Product List ($270 Retail Value)

2. Microdermabrasion
3. Wrinkle Filler
4. Moisturizer
5. Eye Cream
6. Foundation Primer
