Kate, A Glam-Next-Door Girl

Kate, A Glam-Next-Door Girl

Kate and I had a great time getting her ready in her glamorous but casual style. She brought her wardrobe including dresses, sweaters, jeans, wigs, and sunglasses. For makeup, she knew she wanted a bold, black eyeliner look including on her waterline. We matched the color of her sequin dress to champagne, copper, rose, and brown eyeshadows from MAC. Kate loves light pink lipstick topped with shiny gloss. We waited to add the gloss until the indoor photos since wind combined with long hair can make a mess of gloss in no time.

Kate invites you to follow her on Instagram @kateshields78. Here’s how Kate describes herself:

“Since she was eight, Kate has known that her gender identity includes a significant female component. She is still discovering where on the gender identity spectrum she fits but has felt a strong pull toward female gender identity and expression since 2020. Kate loves fashion. Over the years she has evolved her look by merging casual and glamorous styles to create a unique ‘glam next door’ look. Her other photos, past and present, can be found on Instagram @kateshields78.”

It’s party time! Join the DC Trans Ladies for our Fall Soiree in Bethesda, Oct. 15!

It’s party time! Join the DC Trans Ladies for our Fall Soiree in Bethesda, Oct. 15!

Hi ladies! I know you all have been asking for another event so I’m excited to announce that the Bethesdan Hotel has reopened their restaurant and is eager to have us return for our signature Soiree! So assemble your favorite fall outfit (boots anyone?) and join us at our Fall Soiree in bustling downtown Bethesda, Maryland on Saturday, October 15! We will be having dinner at 7 p.m. and hanging out at the bar, lounge, and restaurant areas ’til the bar closes around 11 pm. Crash at the hotel, and be sure to book using our discounted group rate of $119.

The Bethesdan Hotel hosted the DC Trans Ladies at the Saint Patrick’s Day Soiree in 2019.

At our signature soirees, we invite trans-women, their partners, and friends to socialize, network, and relax. We encourage new girls to come out to help boost their confidence and garner tips from those more experienced. And of course, we love having our regulars come out too!

If you haven’t joined the DC Trans Ladies Meetup group yet, this would be a great time to do so if you are a trans-woman, an MtF crossdresser, or genderfluid! (Men are not accepted as members but are welcome at events as guests of members.) We have active members from their twenties into their seventies, and we’d love to have you join us.

If you’re not feeling ready for girl mode in public, you are still welcome to attend in guy mode. Upon arrival, introduce yourself as a member to the hosts, and we will welcome you warmly. Please consider joining us at the Soiree Dinner in the hotel’s dining room. It is an opportunity to sit with your sisters and get to know them.

RSVP to the Soiree dinner here: https://www.meetup.com/dc-transladies-community/events/288362699/

RSVP to the post-dinner Soiree here: https://www.meetup.com/dc-transladies-community/events/288362761/

The Bethesdan hotel staff is delighted to have us, and to demonstrate their appreciation they’ve set up a special room rate of $119/night and discounted event parking. Visit the Meetup events, above, for the booking link and to check out all the event details.

If you’re looking to get your Soiree makeup professionally applied, I will be offering makeup makeovers at my studio in Takoma Park, MD.

Bring your smartphones and cameras, and take pics to share on our meetup site.

We look forward to seeing you all at our Fall Soiree!

Meet Sabrina!

Meet Sabrina!

Sabrina and I had a great time at her makeover and photoshoot this weekend. She brought two outfits: a red, shoulder-baring blouse with shiny, black leggings and a black, crop top paired with a long, black skirt with leg-flaunting slits.

She selected deep, red eye shadows from the MAC Flameboyant Palette and a vivid, orange lipstick to pair with her red blouse. For hair, she started with her natural hair. Then she tried on several wigs before settling on an ombré-auburn, long, curly wig from Joi Wigs in Springfield, Virginia.

Sabrina is a dedicated athlete and a repeat client.

Missy: Off to Never Never Land

Missy: Off to Never Never Land

Melissa arrived decked out in daytime makeup and leather after spending the day strolling around Crystal City. We readily agreed to rock out to a Metallica playlist, kicking off with “Enter Sandman.” We updated her makeup to a dramatic smokey eye and MAC’s “Sin” colored lipstick for a nighttime vibe for heading to Freddie’s Beach Bar. In addition to standard studio shots with a gray background, Missy wanted some rocker chick pics against the brick wall. We looked up ideas online and one with blue side-lighting caught her eye. After some lighting experimentation, we captured the backstage look she was going for.

Maryland has reopened!

Maryland has reopened!

Hi everyone! I continue to be open for all services on my makeover menu including outings. Restaurants, bars, and clubs have started to reopen as COVID-19 restrictions continue to be lifted in Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia. Mask-wearing is now optional in Maryland including Montgomery County and is at the discretion of each business. I have been fully vaccinated and am not requiring clients to wear masks during our sessions except as required by other businesses on outings.

I hope to see you for a makeover, photoshoot, and outing soon at my studio in Takoma Park, MD.

Holiday Sushi Soiree Spectacular!

Join the DC Trans Ladies Meetup in a modern, dark, stylish room with full bar, a kick-ass sound system, and great food at Hanaro Restaurant and Lounge on Saturday, Dec. 8. From 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., women and their guests will enjoy awesome sushi and a pan-Asian menu. After dinner, we will mingle with the other patrons and gradually take over the bar, dancing if you wish.

Dinner: Fun atmosphere. Locally popular and highly regarded on Yelp, and deservedly so. Members of the DC Trans Ladies group and their guests only. Main event is open to all. Important to RSVP here so we have an accurate headcount for the restaurant.

Main Soiree: Starting 9ish, we mingle with the other patrons and gradually take over the bar. Dance. Or just inhale raw fish and Sapporo drafts. It’s all good. Due to the venue and format change, this event will be publicly listed and all are invited, including gentlemen. This change does not necessarily apply to future Soirees. View the main soiree event and RSVP here.

Dress: This is not the Ramada Inn and this is not a “gala,” so do not wear a sparkly floor-length gown. Wear either smart casual/neighborhood bar attire, or something just slightly dressier than that, such as a relatively plain cocktail dress. If uncertain, better to be more casual than formal.

Parking: The municipal garages are free on Saturdays; Hanaro is about 2 blocks from either the Woodmont Triangle garage (on Woodmont) and the St. Elmo/Cordell garage (you can enter from St. Elmo, just one long block west of Hanaro). Park on the street if you wish, but you will have to pay until 10 p.m. 12 minute walk from Bethesda Metro (Red Line).

Lodging: The Doubletree Bethesda is just 2 blocks away and welcomes us with open arms. Free parking is available at the city garage on weekends and is an easier fit for large vehicles (like SUVS, minivans, and pickup trucks) than the hotel parking garage, which has a daily fee.

Makeup Makeovers: Beth will be providing makeup makeovers at her home studio in Cabin John, Maryland.

A Thank You Note from Ann Murdoch

A Thank You Note from Ann Murdoch

Ann Murdoch is an advocate for transgender people

I met Ann Murdoch in 2013 when she came to me for a makeover. Since then, she’s been busy living as herself full-time and publicly advocating for transgender people. She spoke at the Equality Virginia Dinner 2018 and the Veteran’s Affairs LGBT Pride Month 2017 celebration. She’s been featured in the Out100 list and participated in the Veteran’s Day Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with the DC LGBT Center. Somehow Ann still finds the time and energy to attend events I host (bottom right). Thank you, Ann, for giving back to the transgender community with your advocacy!

Hi Beth!

I thought you might want to use a short testimonial (below). I have been privileged and blessed to have been involved some really cool events, and it occurred to me that in every photo, I am wearing makeup I bought from you that you taught me how to apply.

I wanted to say thank you for all the help you have given me and so many others along the way.

Cheers,

Ann

Testimonial

In each of these photos, I am wearing Younique cosmetics I purchased from Beth Taylor. Beth not only represents a great brand of high quality products, but I learned how to properly apply them and look my best at her makeup parties. She is also an exceptionally talented makeup artist and photographer, who makes each of her clients feel special and pampered.

When I needed to look my absolute best for a speech for an audience of about 1,000 people, including the governor of Virginia (top photo, second column from left), I of course turned to Beth to make sure my makeup was flawless.

She is a great friend and ally of the transgender community, and I am a huge fan of hers.

Ann Murdoch
