At her first crossdresser makeover with me, Roberta Joan proudly showed me her printed book of her transformations with Janet’s Closet. As an avid reader and book collector, she values physical books that she can add to her vast collection. She flipped through the pages, showing me her makeup, outfits, and poses.
“I’m not sure what motivates me to crossdress. It’s something I wanted to do for many years but didn’t go full Roberta Joan until 2024,” she said. “Discovering there were places that could make me look feminine was a major turning point.”

The Makeover
At her first crossdresser makeover, we took photos in the studio and my garden. She wore a wig from my collection, a Rene of Paris in Angelique. I applied a natural eye makeup look featuring brown eyeshadows and eyeliner with rosy cheeks and a light red lip that coordinated with a Lularoe dress from my collection. For her second outfit, Roberta Joan selected items from her own collection including a cheetah print blouse and belt paired with a denim skirt, black tights, and black fashion sneakers with silver studs.

Building Confidence to Go Out En Femme
At her second makeover, Roberta Joan and I went to historic downtown Takoma Park. She browsed the books at People’s Book, our locally owned bookstore. After that, we enjoyed Neopolitan-style pizza at Roscoe’s Pizzeria, a short block away.
“Going out with you was quite the experience because I was in makeup and a wig. I had gone to the movies wearing female clothes and my breasts, but without makeup and a wig. That felt incomplete,” Roberta Joan said. Going forward, “I want to learn how to apply makeup and make myself look better as a woman. I also need to expand my wardrobe since most of my clothes are appropriate for warmer weather. I need some items for winter.”

A Feeling of Belonging
Roberta Joan has since attended local Meetup events for crossdressers and transgender women in the Washington, DC Metro area. “I have attended some D.C.A.T.S. events and enjoyed myself and liked meeting other ladies. They made me feel like I belonged.”
Avid Reader and Lego Enthusiast
When she’s not reading a book, Roberta Joan loves building Lego sets and designing her own creations. “Besides being a big reader I am also a Lego enthusiast. I just got back from a train show our club did in Purcellville, VA for their annual Christmas parade and holiday celebration,” she said. “Although I build Lego sets straight out of the box, I also enjoy creating MOCs (My Own Creation) for vintage automobiles, buildings and airplanes.”
