Women- & Trans-friendly LGBTQ+ Bars in the Washington, DC Metro Area

If it’s your first time out presenting as a woman, you may to visit trans-friendly bars or restaurants. The LGBTQ+ Bars on this list regularly have women and trans-women attend. Elizabeth Taylor offers accompanied outings as part of her makeover menu including to these locations.

Freddie’s Beach Bar is a straight-friendly LGBTQ+ Bar and restaurant featuring karaoke and drag shows. Trans-women and crossdressers frequently attend, especially Tuesday to Friday. The servers and crowd are very trans-friendly. The crowd is typically all ages, races, genders, and sexual orientations. Freddie’s is located in Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia. This is my number one choice for a first outing in femme if you prefer an LGBTQ+ space.

As You Are. DC. attracts primarily a women, nonbinary, and transgender type of crowd and promotes itself as an LGBTQIA+ café, bar, and dance lounge. They are sober-friendly while having a full coffee and liquor bar. They also serve food. Tuesday night is trans night and most attendees are in their twenties and thirties. Parking is challenging in Barracks Row so be prepared to use car sharing services or have a significant walk if you find street parking.

Pitchers DC & A League of Her Own offers a women’s specific-space in the lowest level of a larger LGBTQ+ sports bar that’s open to all genders. They sometimes offer dancing on the weekends. A League of Her Own is located in Adams Morgan in Washington, DC. Parking is difficult. You may wish to reserve a parking spot in advance or take a car share or Metro to the area.

Nellie’s Sports Bar is located on the nightlife-dense U Street NW corridor in Washington, DC. Nellie’s offers two floors including an outdoor deck on the second floor. They sometimes have weekend dance parties. I’ve brought crossdressers and trans-women here and had a great time. Parking can be difficult though there are some paid lots in the area.

Trans-friendly Mainstream Restaurants and Bars in Takoma Park, Maryland

For an outing close to my male-to-female transformation studio, I suggest enjoying the trans-friendly bars and restaurants in historic, downtown Takoma Park. You’ll see abundant Pride flags and signs in businesses. Gender-neutral bathrooms are the norm. We can settle into one restaurant for dinner and drinks if you like. Or we can bar hop with drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) and appetizers.

I’ve brought crossdressers and trans-women to these venues many times with great success. I’d highly recommend these trans-friendly restaurants for a first or follow-on outing if you’re ready to go out in a mainstream environment.

One of my favorite options is to start at Motorkat and finish at Roscoe’s Pizzeria. Both are also excellent as stand-alone options. Motorkat offers an eclectic menu of small and midsize plates and an oyster raw bar. Roscoe’s offers brick-oven Neapolitan pizza, salads, appetizers, and desserts. The Roscoe’s tiramisu is delicious!

We have a pan-Mediterranean restaurant and bar called Olive Lounge. My favorite item is the vegetarian lasagna and the mixed appetizer platter. The indoor dining area has the most bar-like feel in Takoma Park and is cozier than the other bars on this list. The outdoor area is covered and has a casual feel.

If you’re looking for American food, trans-friendly Busboys and Poets is located in downtown Takoma just across the Washington, DC boundary line. They offer a variety of salads with protein options, sandwiches, and entrees. The menu is clearly marked with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. If you’re looking for a midday outing, you may enjoy browsing their bookstore and enjoying lunch or coffee.
