Jenna arrived at my Takoma Park, Maryland studio for her third male-to-female makeover and photoshoot in January, only a week after a major winter storm blanketed the Mid-Atlantic with snow and ice. Jenna planned on enjoying her makeover, taking photos in the outfits she brought while listening to her favorite tunes, and maybe, just maybe, doing an outing in girl mode. She wasn’t sure what kind of outing and wanted to leave it kind of open-ended.

After her MtF makeover and several outfit and wig changes complete with photos, we had about an hour left in our five hours together. I mentioned that if we wanted to go out, now was the time. Jenna decided that walking through my “snowcrete”-covered neighborhood sounded best to her. I proposed bringing my camera since snow photos can be ever so pretty. Snow is a natural reflector after all.

Jenna stands against a privet hedge, looking apprehensively at the camera. She has an outing in girl mode for the first time. Snow and trees are behind her. Her right hand is across her waist and her left hand holds her cell phone. She wears a beige sweater dress with a burgundy coat over the top. She wears beautiful gold and brown eyeshadow with matte, plum lipstick.

Jenna Channels Positive Self-Talk on Her First en Femme Outing

Jenna stepped outside hesitantly, building confidence as we took photos and with positive self-talk on her accompanied outing. “I felt scared at first, and then I remembered a line from one of my favorite stories where one character asks the other how they look. The second character says, ‘Like 400 million bucks. Let’s go!’ And so I kept repeating ‘like 400 million bucks’ and that helped me focus on what was in front of me rather than on what others might say or think.”

Jenna smiles and looks toward the camera outside with snow, a metal fence, and woods in the background. She wears a burgundy coat and is holding her cell phone in a black case in front of her. She enjoyed a walk through the neighborhood after her male-to-female makeover with Elizabeth Taylor. Makeup and photo by Elizabeth Taylor. This was her first outing in girl mode.

As she channeled this mantra, she started to express herself in the same way she did in the safety of the photo studio, with arms outstretched in joy. She took selfies with her fist pumping in the air showing “I’ve got this!”

Jenna exults in being outside en femme. Her arms are stretched out to her sides and her eyes are looking downward. She is wearing a burgundy coat. A metal fence, snow, and woods are in the background. Jenna is enjoying her first time in girl mode outside.

Letting Her Fears Go: What It’s Like to Go Outside en Femme

As we took photos, some cars drove past with no incident. Later, a schoolbus pulled up full of children who disembarked just a few feet away from us. Both of these presented the opportunity for Jenna to experience what is what like to be outside among others. “I was feeling a little exposed and wondering what people would say or do,” she said. “People didn’t even say anything and just looked at me and moved along their way. After a while I was able to let my fears go.”

Jenna takes a selfie outside with snow and woods in the background. She wears a beige sweater dress with a maroon coat and beige belt. She has brunette hair. Her right arm is lifted to the right for the selfie and her left arm is pumped into the air in triumph for making it outside successfully in girl mode.

We finished our walk around the neighborhood and returned to the warmth of the studio. Jenna said that she hopes to “be more out and about with people and get more comfortable with social interactions in a safe area where I don’t need to worry.”

Jenna stands next to a holly bush in a maroon coat with a gray, fleece collar and ivory belt. Snow is on the ground. She wears brown and gold eye shadow with dark berry, matte lipstick. The golden sun highlights the right side of her face and hair. Her right hand pushes her hair out of her face. Her amber, brown eyes look toward the camera.
