A Night out with Twisted Knickers Burlesque

Friday night, I introduced seven of my friends to the art, beauty, and magic of burlesque at the State Theatre in Falls Church. All week I tried to explain burlesque to my friends: sexy and witty stripping down to pasties and panties while making artistic and political statements with one’s body. Surrounded with our fun, positive-energy friends, we fully enjoyed the Twisted Knickers Burlesque performance of “Hot Fun in the Summertime”.

My friends included three genetic girls, two genetic males, and two trans-women, Kerri and Allison. Kerri and Allison applied their own Mary Kay makeup, and I helped with the slightest bit of touchups. I went for a more dramatic eye look than usual, using Metallic Taupe creme eye shadow on my lid and into my crease, black pearl mineral eye shadow in the crease and along my lash lines, and crystalline in the brow highlight. I created an exaggerated black liquid eyeliner look, touching it up and making it darker with coal mineral eye shadow. I used the on-trend Mulberry Forest glossy lip stain with the hopes of creating a dramatic, burlesque-worthy look. Check out the red glitter on Glam’s lips, btw! My look is so not dramatic in comparison! 😉

While Allison experienced a straight, mainstream evening venue last weekend in Clarendon, this was Kerri’s first evening out at a non-LGBTQ venue. Both girls looked and felt completely at ease. I was impressed with how much more confident Allison was after one brief week (longest week ever according to her!). With several other trans-women on the invite list, I wanted to ease us into mainstream venues with burlesque, which tends to draw fun, quirky, accepting people. We hope to attend jazz and other fun events on U Street and H Street NE in DC soon!

After the show, we met and talked with two of the performers, Dainty Dandridge and Glam Gamz, who told us about Queer Burlesque that will be at The Black Cat on Oct. 11! We’ve added this to our planned events and are awaiting official details!
