In May, I gave myself a total makeover and photoshoot to prepare for the DC Trans Ladies Spring Fling Soiree. I totally loved my new look and felt like I was walking on sunshine all night long. I had so much fun that I have to tell you about it in excruciating detail. So buckle up, and enjoy the ride!

Choosing the Perfect Outfit

I had been struggling to come up with a Spring outfit for the event. Most of my dresses are either winter or summer themed. Then I looked in Giselle’s wardrobe and saw the perfect dress—a pastel blue maxi dress with pink and purple blooms! This fit the theme perfectly! I slipped it on over a strapless bra and added coral kitten heels. Then I showed Giselle. She immediately approved, and off I went to plot out the rest of my look.

Styling my Hair

First, I brushed out my wet hair with a brush designed for the purpose so that it could dry perfectly straight while I did my makeup. After makeup, I brushed it again with my normal brush and made sure it was parted down the middle. I’m not much for leave-in hair products or blow drying as I prefer a natural feel and look.

The Makeup Makeover: So Exciting!

Next, I planned my makeup look. I wanted to use some of the new MAC Cosmetics makeup colors I had just purchased plus incorporate lots of new techniques I’ve been using this year.

Eye Makeup

I decided that the eyeshadow Celebutante (rosy-pink with red sparkle metallic) matched the flowers on the dress perfectly. My instinct was to pair that color with Carbon (black) for a fabulous smokey eye. But the theme is spring! So what’s a girl to do? I made the pink-purple color the darkest color on the eyelid and lightened it up on the inner corner of my eye and in the crease with Yes to Sequins (light gold with pink pearl metallic) with Shroom (off-white shimmer) as the under-brow highlight. This so worked! I lined my eyes with Prunella, a kohl pencil eyeliner that has a dark purple tone to it. I used lash primer followed by mascara on my lashes. After foundation, I finished up with Omega brow powder to emphasize a slightly thinner arch than my natural brow. When I use a pedestal mirror for this, it’s easy to overdraw my brow. This time, I used a full length mirror for perspective and achieved just the look I wanted.

Face Makeup

With my eyes done, I moved onto face makeup. I applied my standard StudioFix Fluid Foundation with a damp beauty blender. For an on-trend look, I added a lighter, highlighting liquid concealer under my eyes and pulled it up toward my temple with the beauty blender. I swept a new golden highlighting shimmer on my cheekbones before adding blush or bronzer. I took a risk on my blush and used the smallest amount of the super bright Fuschia color, and it worked! It wasn’t too bright for my ivory skin!

Lip Makeup

For lips, some of my clients have been asking for darker lip liner on the outside to contour the lips. Makeup companies have been pushing this trend too so I decided to try it on myself. I used Magenta to line the outside of my lips and filled in with the light pink, Edge-to-Edge. Instead of adding lipstick and distorting the perfect color, I added clear lip gloss for a high shine look. A spritz of finishing spray rounded out the look. Perfection!

The Photoshoot

I still had a spare half an hour before I had to leave for the Soiree. So I found Giselle and convinced her to shoot me with my professional camera in my photo studio. After setting up the lights and camera and giving directions on my preferred focal lengths, I posed for the camera again! I did some hobby modeling in 2017 and the rush of energy from posing instantly returned. After a few photos, I took a look at the screen on the camera to make adjustments to my poses just like I have my clients do.

The time flew by and before I knew it, Giselle had had enough. I wanted to keep going as I was having so much fun! After looking through the photos, I was convinced I had enough gorgeous photos. I was so excited to sort and edit them, but that would have to wait until the next day.

Soiree Time!

With that, I was off to the Soiree at The Bethesdan Hotel. As I got out of the car in the city parking garage and started walking to the hotel, the wind whipped at my hair and threatened to drag my lip gloss everywhere. I grabbed my hair and held it in place to protect my look. I switched from my practical Teva sandals into my kitten heels on the bench in front of the hotel and put the sandals in my white, Coach purse. In I walked, glowing with delight at the happiness I felt with my total makeover!
