My First Southern Comfort Conference

I returned late Sunday night from my first Southern Comfort Conference (SCC) after driving over 600 miles from Atlanta, GA, to Washington, DC. My mind is still whirling from four days of total immersion in the trans* community.

Beth dresses in a black top and skirt, black wedge sandals, silver jewelry, and Mulberry Forest Glossy Lip Stain to head down for her first night of networking at SCC.

I arrived late Wednesday night to a bustling patio filled with trans-women. My minivan was packed full of Riedel wine glasses, wine, Mary Kay demos and products, Ardyss corsets and shapewear, and one small suitcase of my clothes. After three bell hop carts delivered my wares, I changed and went downstairs to mingle with the ladies, including several I’ve met before in the DC area. I went to bed early by SCC standards between 1 and 2 a.m.

On Thursday, I was completely consumed by preparing for and running my wine education seminar and wine tasting social. Twenty guests attended my wine education seminar and gave me excellent feedback on the information I presented, my presentation style, and personal appearance. Yes, I love getting compliments and trans-women never cease to compliment my appearance! 🙂 We tasted three United States wines during the seminar and used a simplified Court of Master Sommeliers tasting grid to analyze the wines together. The guests enjoyed this so much that one girl even asked for permission to take a photo of my slide!

After my seminar, I had to hurry to set up for the wine tasting social in the bistro area. The hotel graciously provided tables, ice and ice buckets, and standing cocktail tables while SCC volunteers helped me move 15 dozen wine glasses and three cases of wine from my room to the bistro area. My friend Laura and SCC volunteers helped me with many set-up and logistics details. We tasted six wines from the lands of the Romance languages (Spain, France, Italy, Chile, Argentina, Portugal). I’ll post more details of the wine tasting on my zindiva.com website soon. Guests had a great time and many thanked me as they left. After tear down, I was exhausted and went back to my room and fell asleep by 11 p.m.

Beth and Kristin Beck both attended the trans-vets reception on Friday. Kristin recently published the book "Warrior Princess" that described her time on Seal Team 6 and life as a transgender woman.

On Friday, I slept through the seminar I planned to attend on trans-veterans but did make it to lunch, Kristin Beck‘s talk, the trans-veteran’s reception, cocktail hour, dinner, and the Jungle. I met some awesome people at the trans-veteran’s reception including veterans from the Korean and Vietnam eras up to the present and all branches of service. I really hit it off with Christine, who is also a Mary Kay consultant who works primarily with trans-women but also has some genetic girl (GG) clients. She also took photos of the conference and I loved posing at her portable studio on Saturday night. At dinner, I sat with a couple of cute girls, Markee and Raven, who had attended my wine tasting.

Beth had a blast dancing and flirting with trans-women at Jungle, the largest LGBT club in Atlanta.

Later that evening, I headed with the SCC ladies via shuttle bus to the Jungle, the largest LGBT club in Atlanta, though about half the size of Town Danceboutique in DC. I had a blast at Jungle, the best night out at a club for me in quite some time. I loved dancing and flirting with the trans-ladies and before I knew it, it was 3 a.m. and time to take the last shuttle back to the hotel. Did I do the smart thing and go to bed? Of course not–it’s SCC! I had a few girls up for some wine and hanging out and stayed up til 6 a.m.!

On Saturday, I slept through the SCC lunch and ate at Maggiano’s across the street.

Laura looks fabulous with her Mary Kay makeover. Despite her hard work on video production and lighting, her makeup stayed put all night!

Then I had a Mary Kay makeup makeover for my friend, Laura, who wanted a simple yet elegant look for the ball. After applying skin care and liquid foundation, I set to work on the fun part–color! Her soft blue eyes invited me to use beautiful golds, browns, and coppers (Honey Spice, Gold Coast, Amber Blaze, Copper Glow) for eyeshadows along with black eyeliner, lash primer, and Lash Love Lash-Lengthening Black Mascara. We created light pink cheeks (Shy Blush) and subtle contouring (Bronzer and Highlight Powder). We finished off her look with the Enchanted Mauve Glossy Lip Stain and the Finishing Spray. I love the limited edition Glossy Lip Stains! The stain stays all night long and into the next day unless removed with eye makeup remover!

After that, I took a nap, applied my Fantasy and Fairytales makeup, then went to dinner, danced, and socialized.

As the final official SCC event, the dance and bar areas drew lots of trans* people.

With it being the last night of SCC, I made sure to talk to lots of girls and dance with a few too.

It's time to get silly! Beth helps Tiffany, a first-timer, smile for photos by being her silly self.

Then I invited a couple girls up to my room for some wine and I stayed up til 4 a.m. chatting. Yikes–this SCC schedule is nuts!

Sarissa loved her new look and how easy it is to apply.

Sunday morning, Sarissa invited me to join her for breakfast and then she came up to my room for a makeup makeover before my late checkout. She loved her look and the tips she picked up.

I finally got on the road to leave SCC close to 3 p.m. Sunday when there were very few trans* people still at the hotel. I felt like I was leaving almost a ghost town compared to the bustling venue that greeted me when I arrived.

Southern Comfort Conference: I’ll be there–Will you?

Elizabeth Taylor pours wine and educates guests at her Romance in a Glass wine tasting.

I’ll be attending The Southern Comfort Conference this September in Atlanta. I will be conducting a wine education seminar and running the wine education and networking event! I’ll also be bringing my makeup and corset/shape wear collection with me. In fact, one friend of mine has already booked a makeup makeover and a corset fitting for during the conference!

Perhaps it strikes you as odd that I’m talking about a conference and a wine tasting on a makeover blog. Here’s the connection: The Southern Comfort Conference is the largest transgender social, educational, and entertainment conference in the world! Meanwhile, the majority of my makeover clients belong to the transgender community! Thus, I will be sharing multiple passions of mine–wine education and transformation makeovers–with a community a truly enjoy. 🙂

If you’ll be at the 2013 Southern Comfort Conference, I look forward to meeting you there! I hope to see you at my wine education seminar or at the wine education and networking event on Thursday!

Let me know if you’d like to book a private makeup lesson, makeup makeover, or a corset/body shaper fitting at the Southern Comfort Conference. To being fabulous, ladies!

Shopping and Cocktails with the Girls!

What a perfect day yesterday! I shopped for clothes to add to my crossdresser wardrobe and had some great finds including dresses, skirts, camisoles, blouses, and a cardigan. Great prices too! 🙂 In the evening, I met up with a group of tgirls and admirers at a lounge in DC, where we sipped on custom girly cocktails and chatted for hours!

Several of the girls asked me questions about the corsets and other body shapers that I feature. Brandy asked if I had a “corset bar” in my studio. I told her that I have four styles of corsets for a wide range of sizes as well as panty reshapers to lift and round the butt. Leigh mentioned how much she loves corsets. Since I was wearing my Body Magic shaper, I showed the girls the quality of the garment, which they admired.

Christine complimented my makeup as she left. I had applied a neutral, bright, fun look used the creme eye shadows of apricot twist, iced cocoa, and pale pink; black eyeliner; Lash Love Lengthening mascara–love it!; and neutral lips. I absolutely LOVE owning all the Mary Kay eyeshadows so I can play and create new looks!

Throughout the evening, we talked about lots of other girly things too, but my lips are sealed! 🙂 To get involved with the tgirls in DC, check out tgirlnation.com and http://www.meetup.com/DC-TransLadies-Community/

Having a Blast with Barbie!

Every crossdresser wants something a little different from a makeover: more passable, glamour, natural look, and Barbie. Yes, Barbie! One of my current clients loves looking “a little trashy” and wanted to go for a Barbie look. I scoured the images on Google of Barbie dolls and Barbie makeup styles and decided on a Barbie makeup look: smoky eyes with light pink on the eyelid.

The Makeup Look: I used Pale Pink cream eye shadow on the lid, Beach Blonde cream eye shadow on the highlight, and Black Pearl mineral eye shadow of the crease. I used the smudger brush with the Black Pearl to create a smoky eye look. We finished off Barbie’s eyes with black eyeliner, Lash Primer, and Ultimate Mascara. For lips, we went for a touch dramatic, outlining her lips with Spiced Tea lip liner to make them a touch larger, and filling in with lip liner. Then we added the bright pink Hibiscus Lip Stick and Pink Sateen Lip Gloss. We used the Translucent loose powder to set her makeup.

The Hair: We used a long blonde wig with a touch of black streaks from my collection. The hair is a touch wavy and looks great on Barbie with it over one shoulder. This is definitely not the wig to wear if the goal is to be passable!

The Clothes: Barbie already owned a bright pink and back miniskirt and a lacy black top with 3/4 length sleeves. We added a black, stretchy belt, and a one-of-a-kind teal necklace. She donned black tights with a small pattern on them and black pumps. Super sexy!

The Barbie Attitude: As the makeover progressed, Barbie’s mood and presentation began to change to match her outward image. She became more flirty and into girl talk. She sauntered down the hall with confidence, one foot in front of the other, hips swaying. She flipped her hair over one shoulder and looked back at me, perfectly posed for the camera. She leaned against the door frame, embodying her flirty personality.

Barbie tried on a couple of other wigs and outfits, which she promptly declared “Soccer Mom” because of the comparatively conservative and flattering bob cut. And just as quickly as the wig change, she changed to present more as her version of Soccer Mom, looking cute and sexy but much more subdued than Barbie. I was thrilled when Soccer Mom changed back into Barbie for girl talk and wine downstairs with another genetic girl (GG) and me. I loved the Barbie girl time and was a touch bored by Soccer Mom in comparison. I can’t wait to visit with Barbie again and find out what other type of look she wants!

Makeup and Corset Party plus After-Party!

Last week I held a makeup and corset party for trans-ladies and allies. My standard makeover party has focused on skin care and makeup using Mary Kay products and teaching girls how to apply their makeup. This party had another core theme: body shapers.

Girls began arriving an hour early to get fitted for corsets and panty shapers to give them a beautiful hourglass look and rounded derriere. The Ardyss shapers gave immediate results, flattening tummies, pulling in waists by 2-3 sizes, rounding the buttocks, and creating a beautiful, feminine figure. The girls wore the shapers throughout the entire makeup party and were definitely disappointed to take them off at the end of the night.

After we had all put on our makeup and enjoyed apple pie, hummus and pita, all six of us decided to go to Freddie’s Beach Bar (http://freddiesbeachbar.com/) in Crystal City including the girl who had never been out of her house dressed before! We strolled into Freddie’s with confidence and sat at a large hightop table near the bar. Another couple of friends joined us and we totally had fun chilling with our group of the evening until the lights came on and we returned to our homes.

This particular group of girls totally clicked with each other. The girls were super affirming, supporting, and accepting of each other. I loved that they helped build each other’s confidence to go out in public to Freddie’s.

To another fabulous evening!

Makeup Parties for Trans-Ladies

I love my girls and helping them look and feel beautiful. I’ve hosted several makeup parties with four to six guests. Two have been specifically for trans-women and allies. We learned about and applied anti-aging skin care, matched foundation shades, covered various hues and intensities of beard shadows, and created a basic makeup look. For cis-girls, many beauty consultants use a “face race” to see who can apply their color the fastest and reward speed.

Speed doesn’t work in my trans-world–in fact, this makeup application process is where I get to do the most teaching. At a recent party, the girls selected one of four different looks, each of which had directions for how to apply the color. I helped the girls choose their looks and get started. One girl had very deep-set eyes and so I recommended skipping the darkest eyeshadow color or just using it on the outermost part of the eyelid. Another girl was super cute and bubbly. She was already wearing a bright pink lipstick that suited her outfit and attitude perfectly, so I encouraged her to keep that as part of her 80s look. She applied the rest of her makeup with relative ease. The third girl is working on a natural look since she is planning to go full-time. She applies her eyeliner impeccably and proudly tells me that she’s been practicing with the help of her sisters. The fourth was totally thrilled that she successfully covered her beard shadow and set to work on a dramatic eye look.

After we all finish, we take fun, silly, and flirty photos in my hallway. I wish I could share them with you all but my girls’ privacy and safety is important. I have a client who recently walked in her neighborhood during the day alone and was quickly taunted with “go to hell” and worse from a passersby. She told me she won’t be walking alone in her neighborhood anytime soon. Less than a month earlier, she walked outside dressed and in makeup for the first time ever (I accompanied her and took photos for her). I felt so proud to be with her as she developed confidence in herself.

I hope I can help change our culture so more people accept and appreciate us for who we are regardless of our gender identity or gender presentation.

To being fabulous!
